A UK woman managed to prove that the father of her child had colluded with a DNA test lab employee to fake his paternity test and avoid paying over $125,000 in child support.

That her partner broke up with her just three days after giving birth to their son, in 2022, was bad enough, but what came next was an even lower blow for 31-year-old Chelsea Miller. Her ex, Sheldon B., started denying that he was Louie’s father and then asked for a paternity test. At the time of their breakup, Sheldon stood to save £94,000 ($125,800) if the DNA test came back negative, but his ex wasn’t worried, because she ‘always knew who the father of my child was’. Imagine the shock she got when the paternity test came back negative.

Miller may have known that Sheldon B. was her child’s father, but in the eyes of the Court, the DNA test was irrefutable evidence of the opposite. The 31-year-old didn’t give up, though. Instead, she managed to persuade her ex’s mother, Katie, to provide a sample of her DNA to another laboratory, which showed that Louie was her grandson and thus linked Sheldon to the baby as well.

The result had thrown a wrench in Sheldon’s plans, and there was nothing left for him to do but admit to faking the paternity test to get out of paying child support. Apparently, he had asked his aunt, who knew someone at a DNA lab, to help him avoid responsibility. That someone was Robert P., who later admitted to swapping Sheldon’s DNA sample with his own to skew the test results. The 38-year-old man admitted his guilt, but there was no proof that he had received compensation for his help.

Both accomplices pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit fraud and received sentences of 50 weeks and 33 weeks in jail. As for Chelsea, she expressed her disappointment with the level of unprofessionalism displayed by the DNA lab worker who assisted her ex-partner.

“The level of unprofessionalism and violation of trust in this case is beyond unacceptable,” she told The Sun. “Patients deserve to feel safe and respected when receiving care, especially in situations as sensitive as this.”
