How far would you go for a front-row seat to fame? That’s the question at the heart of Lurker, a new film from The Bear writer Alex Russell. In the movie, which hits theaters Aug. 22, Théodore Pellerin plays Matthew, whose chance encounter with rising musician Oliver (Archie Madekwe) leads to him joining the performer’s inner circle. But it’s not easy being on the inside, and the more desperate Matthew becomes to stay close to Oliver, the less Oliver wants him around — leading Matthew to make a series of disturbing choices in which he succeeds at flipping his dynamic with Oliver on its head.

Lurker is not the first movie to give us insight into the joys — and inherent dangers — of obsession. The film, which currently has a 96% score on Rotten Tomatoes, fits firmly into a growing subgenre of movies that are about getting as close as possible to the object of one’s unrelenting obsession.

But by the time the family decides they don’t want Oliver around, he’s already sunk his claws into their lives and is refusing to let go.

Ingrid Goes West (2017)

In this black comedy, Ingrid (Aubrey Plaza) is a loner with no friends — well, in real life, at least. When she starts following free-spirited Venice Beach Instagram influencer Taylor (Elizabeth Olsen), Ingrid decides to head out to California to befriend her. It works — for a while. But when Ingrid can’t quite hide her obsession, things fall apart fast, and Ingrid spirals to comedic, and honestly, really sad, results.

Black Swan (2010)

Nina (Natalie Portman) has always wanted to be the star of her ballet company, but her shy, demure personality means she often fades into the background. But when the uninhibited Lily (Mila Kunis) joins the company, it sparks an intense connection — and rivalry. Nina’s fascination with Lily draws out a darker side Nina has never seen before.

The Talented Mr. Ripley (1999)

While the 2024 Netflix series starring Andrew Scott also told the story of author Patricia Highsmith’s famous con artist Tom Ripley, the 1999 film, starring Matt Damon as the titular character, portrays Ripley as a person obsessed. The object of his desire is shipping heir and playboy Dickie Greenleaf (Jude Law) — he can’t help but want to be a part of his world. Unfortunately, Ripley’s Italian vacation with Dickie takes a violent turn — and soon, Ripley isn’t just living in Dickie’s world but is literally using his name and identity.

Single White Female (1992)

When Allie (Bridget Fonda) puts out an ad for a new roommate in the paper after a breakup, Hedy (Jennifer Jason Leigh) shows up at her door — and at first, everything seems great. Then, Hedy starts getting weird: copying Allie’s appearance, sabotaging her relationships and eventually trying to take over her life. As things escalate, Hedy’s violent nature is revealed, leading to a showdown between these two roommates.

A new version of Single White Female is currently in development, with Jenna Ortega and Taylor Russell reportedly in consideration for the lead roles.

All About Eve (1950)

Before Lurker showcased the dark side of fame, there was All About Eve — another movie about an obsessed fan who worms their way into the life of the object of their admiration. Eve (Anne Baxter) is a fan of famed actress Margo (Bette Davis) and becomes her personal assistant. But when Eve charms Margo’s friends and the theater world at large, it becomes clear that Eve’s true agenda is to shove Margo out of the spotlight so she can claim it for herself.
