According to other users in the Reddit thread, this last-ditch cancellation deal from Apple seems to be new. That said, it's a tactic that plenty of other streaming platforms employ — you know the thing, when you go to cancel a plan and they woo you back with a discount that seems like a steal right before you hit that "cancel" button.
While 54% off the new rate for two months isn't a bad deal, there is a better way to lock in a cheaper rate on an Apple TV+ subscription. Savvy Apple subscribers may have already noticed that the new rate change is only for monthly subscribers. Meaning if you opt in to an annual plan, the rate remains $99.99/year. That's $56.88 in savings across 12 months (compared to $14 in savings over two months, followed by the rate increasing again).
