The price of Apple TV+ is going up, but Reddit has a hack to save on the service

Apple TV+ is yet another streaming service that has announced a price hike, with a monthly subscription cost rising from $9.99/month to $12.99/month, effective as of August 21. (Existing customers will see the rate change take effect on their next billing cycle.) If the idea of spending even more to watch Severance is getting your goat (see what I did there?), there are ways to keep costs down.

If you find the whole idea of these seemingly constant price increases annoying and want to cancel outright, one Reddit user posted that their recent cancellation deal for Apple TV+ was for $5.99/month for two months, or 54% off the new monthly rate. According to other users in the Reddit thread, this last-ditch cancellation deal from Apple seems to be new. That said, it's a tactic that plenty of other streaming platforms employ — you know the thing, when you go to cancel a plan and they woo you back with a discount that seems like a steal right before you hit that "cancel" button.

While 54% off the new rate for two months isn't a bad deal, there is a better way to lock in a cheaper rate on an Apple TV+ subscription. Savvy Apple subscribers may have already noticed that the new rate change is only for monthly subscribers. Meaning if you opt in to an annual plan, the rate remains $99.99/year. That's $56.88 in savings across 12 months (compared to $14 in savings over two months, followed by the rate increasing again).

How to avoid Apple TV+'s new price increase

Apple TV+ is an all-original streaming service, meaning that you won't find an extensive catalog of classic movies and shows here, but you will get access to hundreds of exclusive, original shows and movies like Ted Lasso, Severance, Platonic, and more, plus loads of live sports like access to MLS Season Pass and MLB games, too.

A monthly Apple TV+ subscription now costs $12.99/month, a 30% increase over past rates, but you can lock in an annual rate for $99/year and save. That averages out to a much more palatable $8.25 per month, or an overall savings of more than 36% versus the new monthly rate.

How much does Apple TV+ cost now?

As of August 21, a monthly Apple TV+ subscription costs $12.99/month, a 30% increase over their previous going rate of $9.99/month. But the streamer has announced that the annual subscription rate will not be changing, so new and existing customers can lock in an annual rate for $99/year.
