Everton were left furious after VAR intervened to overturn a penalty in stoppage time of Saturday's 2-2 draw with Manchester United.

The Red Devils had fought back to level terms thanks to goals from Bruno Fernandes and Manuel Ugarte, but it looked like their hard work would come to nothing when referee Andy Madley awarded Everton a penalty in the third minute of stoppage time.

Ashley Young went to ground under duress from Matthijs de Ligt and Harry Maguire, both of whom looked to have pulled Young's shirt before he hit the turf. The referee quickly awarded a penalty, before the VAR suggested a review.

After checking the monitor, Madley ultimately overturned his decision, much to the frustration of those in blue, and the Premier League have now explained why.

"VAR checked the referee's call of penalty to Everton for a challenge by Maguire on Young and deemed that no foul had been committed and recommended an on-field review," a statement read. "The referee overturned the original decision and play restarted with a drop ball."

United managed to hold on for a draw and a share of the spoils, keeping them one point behind Everton in 15th.
