Barcelona are interested in signing Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali alongside striker Alexander Isak, a report has claimed.

Isak is enjoying a stellar campaign at St James' Park and his electric form - 19 goals and five assists in 25 Premier League games - has predictably attracted interest from most of Europe's elite, including Barcelona.

However, with Isak expected to be valued at close to £150m, a deal could prove too challenging for Barcelona this summer, although they may still do business with Newcastle over another player.

Mundo Deportivo state Barcelona officials are keen on Tonali, who has been a target for the La Liga giants for no fewer than five years now.

A bid of €65m (£54.3m) in 2020 was knocked back by Tonali's then-employers Brescia but Barcelona have never given up hope of eventually striking a deal for the Italian, whose blend of defensive awareness and passing vision would seemingly make him a strong fit for Barcelona's famed style of play.

Scouts continue to wax lyrical about Tonali but, as it stands, a transfer remains unlikely due to the cost of the operation. Newcastle paid £58m to sign the 24-year-old and have him under contract until 2028, so they are in a comfortable position when it comes to Tonali's future.

Newcastle would be reluctant to even entertain offers for Tonali, who is a key cog in Eddie Howe's preferred midfield trio and has repeatedly stressed his happiness with the Magpies in the face of rumours over his future.

One midfielder who could be leaving Newcastle, however, is Sean Longstaff. Out of favour and with 12 months remaining on his contract, the homegrown favourite is back on the radar of long-term admirers Manchester United.
