Alphonso Davies suffers devastating knee injury

Bayern Munich have confirmed Alphonso Davies has suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee, ending his hopes of participating in the latter stages of the Champions League as well as this summer's Gold Cup with Canada.

Davies will undergo surgery to correct the issue and is likely to be out of action for at least nine months, potentially giving him limited time to get fully up to speed ahead of the 2026 World Cup.

Bayern have also confirmed a knee injury for Davies' team-mate Dayot Upamecano which will sideline the Frenchman for a number of weeks.

"Unfortunately, there's always the risk of players returning from international breaks with injuries - this time we've been hit particularly hard," Bayern's board member for sport Max Eberl said in a club statement.

"The absence of Alphonso Davies and Dayot Upamecano weighs heavily on FC Bayern. Phonzy will get all the support he needs on his road to recovery. We'll also be keeping a close eye on Upa in the coming weeks and expect him to be available again soon. We have a strong squad and will compensate for these absences.

"We'll now grow even closer together. The quality is there to continue pursuing our big goals."

Davies recently ended what felt like never-ending speculation of a move to Real Madrid by signing a new five-year contract at Bayern – committing his future to the Bavarian giants alongside attacking midfielder Jamal Musiala.

The 24-year-old has been an integral part of Vincent Kompany's Bayern, who are looking to reclaim their Bundesliga title from Bayer Leverkusen, and things will not be straightforward for the 33-time winners now that Davies will be missing at left-back.

The gap to reigning champions Bayer Leverkusen is already down to six points, as a result of recent indifferent form from Bayern. They do, however, remain strong candidates to win the Champions League and are many people's favourites to overcome their two-legged quarter-final tie with Inter.
